This year, for the second year running, Austin hosted the X Games extreme sport competition. In keeping with a tradition started in the first year the inaugural competition for the event was held in downtown Austin on Congress Ave., right in the shadow of the Texas Capitol building. The event in question was the Moto X Step Up final, which featured riders on dirt bikes attempting to fly as high as possible over a huge mound of dirt.
I did not attend last year's event so I had not idea exactly what to expect but given the history of the X Games I knew the event would be exciting and surely draw a crowd. I was correct on both counts. As I walked north on Congress Ave. I could see that Congress was blocked off from 9th St. all the way to the Capitol, with a huge dirt ramp constructed at the intersection of 10th and Congress. I arrived an hour before the event and crowds were already starting to swell. X Games ticket holders were allowed closest to the action but that didn't stop onlookers from gathering on 10th street and on Congress Ave directly in front of the Capitol.
Check the gallery below to see some of the exciting sights I saw.
All in all I can say that for me this event was a worthwhile one to attend. I'm not an extreme sports fan but I do marvel at the tricks performed by the riders and they were definitely flying high. The crowd was great too. At just about any big event in Austin you'll find an eclectic mix of people who are into fun. That's all for now but if you're jonesing for a little more downtown Austin X Games action stick around to watch the video below which includes the crowd scene and a few of the jumps.
